Collection Management and Care-New Mexico History Museum

The Palace of the Governors/New Mexico History Museum is seeking qualified volunteers or interns interested in collections care and/or conservation. Currently the Museum has begun a comprehensive program to re-house the 3D History Collection, which includes over 10,000 artifacts. The Museum’s collection dates as far back as the 1600s and contains a variety of objects including: furniture, weapons, household goods, personal belongings, and tools.
The Museum will be progressively inventorying, cataloguing, digitizing, and re-housing using archival methods with the purpose of preserving part of New Mexico’s history. All of the objects must be re-housed and updated in the database.
This is a “hands-on” program where volunteers will gain practical and valuable skills in the museum field. It is our goal to provide a comfortable educational environment for volunteers and interns who will play a vital role in helping the museum to achieve its goals.
We are looking for people who are interested in assisting with all aspects of collections management and care. Volunteers should be organized, reliable, and hard working. Any individuals who possess either computer skills museum training are especially encouraged to apply. Days and times are flexible.
Expectations: Able to work with a team; is enthusiastic, dependable, and flexible. Use professional conduct with guests, staff, and fellow volunteers. Adhere to applicable Dept of Cultural Affairs (DCA) and POG/NMHM policies and procedures. Willing to learn new information through hands-on experience. Follow directions, especially those regarding safety and security.
Re-Housing includes the following: Building archival trays, building archival storage mounts, storing artifacts in boxes and trays and moving them onto shelves, recording catalogue numbers and tagging artifacts, iInventorying collections, entering artifact information onto a database
Training: Attend a collections handling workshop and general re-housing training.
