Alumni
For over thirty years, our graduates have been instrumental in the preservation of the United States’ cultural heritage. We have analyzed and conserved the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Star-Spangled Banner, the Treaty of Paris, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and works of art by Old Masters to contemporary artists from Rembrandt to Van Gogh to Wyeth. We have preserved Babe Ruth’s baseball contract, the original R2D2 from the movie Star Wars, the world’s first photograph, Elvis Presley’s 81 gold records, the 1905 Wright Flyer III, George Washington’s dentures, Franklin Roosevelt’s braces, original manuscripts by James Joyce and Henry David Thoreau, and early animation cells from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. We have led in the preservation of the architectural interiors of Mount Vernon, Colonial Williamsburg, the Capitol, and the White House. We have also worked at archeological sites from Delaware to Turkey, Mayan murals in the jungles of Guatemala, and Navaho sites in Arizona. Alumni have assisted FEMA with emergency response efforts following presidentially declared disasters such as hurricanes and floods, and graduates also have been called upon to assist in international preservation efforts in Kobe, Japan, and most recently, in Baghdad.
As of September 2006, we have graduated 286 Master’s-level students. Fifty-four percent of our graduates work in museums, libraries, archives, or historic houses, 35% in private practice, 3% in regional conservation laboratories, 2% in academic institutions, and the remaining 6% in conservation science or allied fields, including publications, materials science, art history, or environmental science. Thirty-six percent of our graduates are in leadership positions within cultural and academic institutions as directors, conservation division heads, or senior conservators responsible for the management of specific conservation departments. They are also responsible for public advocacy, nationwide disaster response and recovery efforts, revisions to ethical codes and standards, and current work toward the development and implementation of professional certification.
Our graduates have pioneered innovative examination and treatment techniques, developed national standards for the preservation of our cultural heritage, and preserved our cultural icons. Their work has directly influenced the fields of art conservation, the history of art, and the history of technology, anthropology and archaeology and has insured the availability of often fragile and vulnerable cultural materials for further scholarship and research.
